In the war-torn Gaza Strip, 54 couples exchanged vows in a mass wedding, a rare celebration of new life amidst two years of conflict and tragedy. Eman Hassan Lawwa and Hikmat Lawwa, both 27, were among the couples, dressed in traditional Palestinian attire as they walked hand-in-hand past the ruins of Khan Younis. The wedding, funded by Al Fares Al Shahim, a humanitarian aid operation backed by the United Arab Emirates, offered a brief respite from the suffering of the Gaza's 2 million residents, who have been displaced by the war. Entire areas of cities have been flattened, and aid shortages continue to plague daily life. Despite the challenges, the young couple remains optimistic. "We want to be happy like the rest of the world," Hikmat said, his dreams of a home, a job, and a stable life still intact. However, their reality is stark, with the couple struggling to find basic necessities like food and shelter. For Palestinians, weddings are an important social and economic tradition, often elaborate celebrations that mark the future for families. However, in Gaza, the war has made these events rare. Randa Serhan, a professor of sociology, notes that weddings are a symbol of resilience and a celebration of new generations carrying on Palestinian traditions. As the couples danced and waved Palestinian flags, their joy was tempered by the harsh reality of their situation. Eman, who lost her father, mother, and other family members during the war, struggled to experience joy amidst the sorrow. "God willing, we will rebuild brick-by-brick," she said, her tears a testament to the hope that still remains. The mass wedding serves as a reminder of the human spirit's capacity for resilience and hope, even in the face of unimaginable adversity. As one of the couples, Eman and Hikmat, embark on their new life together, they do so with the knowledge that their future is uncertain, but their determination to rebuild and start anew is unwavering.
