Israel has received what it believes are the remains of a hostage from Palestinian militants in Gaza, handed over to the Red Cross. The remains are thought to be those of an Israeli national and a Thai national, who were taken hostage during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. This brings the total number of returned hostages to 27 since the US-brokered ceasefire began on October 10. In Gaza, Israeli drone strikes have killed two Palestinians, including a videographer in Khan Younis, and a man near the Bureij refugee camp. The Palestinian Health Ministry reports that over 350 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since the ceasefire. In the West Bank, Israeli forces have pushed forward their operations, killing two Palestinians accused of attacking soldiers. The military has also demolished the homes of suspected militants, including a family home in Nablus, citing the need to deter future attacks. Tensions remain high in the region, with Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon continuing almost daily, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu renewing calls for a demilitarised buffer zone along the Israel-Syria border. The Pope's visit to the Middle East has highlighted the need for peace in the region, as violence continues to claim civilian lives. The humanitarian toll of the conflict is evident, with Gaza's Health Ministry reporting over 70,100 Palestinian casualties, and the Palestinian population in the West Bank facing increased restrictions and violence from Israeli forces. The international community remains concerned about the escalating situation and the need for a lasting resolution to the conflict.
