In a company-wide 'code red' alert, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has warned that the firm's ChatGPT technology is facing intense competition from tech giants, particularly Google. The warning comes as OpenAI, valued at half a trillion dollars, struggles to generate significant revenue from its popular yet free chatbot service. According to a memo to staff, Altman acknowledged that ChatGPT is at a critical juncture and that the company needs to devote resources to fending off the new competition. This means delaying other projects, including the introduction of advertising to the chatbot and progress on AI agents that automate tasks related to shopping and health. Google's recent launch of its Gemini AI model has sparked concerns over OpenAI's ability to maintain its lead in the AI market. The move marks a significant turnaround for Google, which was initially caught off guard by ChatGPT's launch three years ago and faced ridicule for its early blunders. As major investors eye OpenAI's valuation, questions are growing on how the company will generate sufficient revenue to meet the costs of delivering AI to its hundreds of millions of users.
