A proposed legislation, the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, could soon make it impossible for Americans to hold dual citizenship. Senator Bernie Moreno, a Republican from Ohio, is pushing for the bill, which would require US citizens with foreign citizenship to choose between their two nationalities. According to Fox News, Moreno believes that dual citizenship creates 'conflicts of interest and divided loyalties.' He cited his own experience, giving up his Colombian citizenship at 18 to become an American. 'Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege,' he said. 'If you want to be an American, it's all or nothing.' However, current US law allows citizens to maintain multiple nationalities without issue. In fact, the US government states that 'US law does not require a US citizen to choose between US citizenship and another (foreign) nationality.' If enacted, the Exclusive Citizenship Act would task the State Department and Department of Homeland Security with tracking dual citizens. Those identified would have one year to renounce their foreign citizenship or formally relinquish their US citizenship. Failure to comply would result in automatic loss of US citizenship. The proposed legislation is part of the Republican focus on immigration and citizenship regulations. Critics argue that dual citizenship is a common practice and that the bill would unfairly penalize Americans with foreign roots. Supporters, however, believe that the law would promote national unity and reduce the risk of divided loyalties.
