James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash has ignited the global box office, raking in a staggering $544 million in its first week worldwide. Despite its impressive numbers, the film still trails behind the blockbuster debut of 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water. In its opening weekend, Fire and Ash generated an estimated $347 million globally, with $88 million coming from the US and Canada, and $250 million from international markets. The film has successfully become the strongest holiday opening of 2025, narrowly surpassing animated hit Zootopia 2. Domestic earnings reached a total of $112 million, with an additional $24 million on Christmas Day, pushing the film's total past the $500 million mark. While Fire and Ash's first-week performance is a solid start, it lags behind The Way of Water's opening weekend, which brought in approximately $134 million domestically and $441 million globally in 2022. Despite the competition from other holiday releases, including Marty Supreme and Zootopia 2, Fire and Ash's success may be just the beginning. With a potential second-week boost, the film may still reach its earning target. The Avatar franchise, including upcoming releases Avatar 4 in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031, continues to generate excitement. However, James Cameron has emphasized that the future of the series is uncertain, stating, 'If we don't get to make 4 and 5, I'll hold a press conference and tell you what we were gonna do.'
