A decade has passed since Anurag Kashyap's ambitious neo-noir film Bombay Velvet tanked at the box office, despite featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in lead roles. The film's dismal performance led Anurag to vow never to collaborate with established stars again. In a recent interview, he opened up about the lasting impact of the film's failure on his relationships with Ranbir and Anushka. Anurag revealed that whenever he talks about Bombay Velvet, Ranbir becomes visibly upset, urging him to move on from the topic. However, Anurag feels compelled to address the issue, given the constant media attention surrounding the film's failure. The director confessed to feeling awkward around Ranbir and Anushka in the aftermath of the film's failure, citing his own personal demons and the immense trust they had placed in him. He admitted to growing distant from the two actors, with their interactions becoming more superficial over time. Interestingly, Anurag attributed a significant portion of the film's failure to Ranbir's hair style, which he described as a deliberate creative choice. The film, based on historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables, was made on a budget of ₹115 crore but managed to collect only ₹43 crore worldwide and ₹23.71 crore domestically. In a bid to move on from the past, Anurag is set to star in the upcoming film Dacoit, scheduled for release in March 2026. Ranbir, on the other hand, has two releases lined up in 2026, including Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War and Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana. Meanwhile, Anushka has been away from the film industry for an extended period, with no recent projects announced.
