The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced new rules for the 99th Oscars ceremony, set for 2027. The changes bring a silver lining for Indian filmmakers, allowing two Indian films to be nominated for the Best International Feature category.
The new rules also permit actors to be nominated for more than one performance in acting categories, as long as those performances place in the top five votes. Additionally, only roles credited in the film's legal billing and performed by humans with their consent will be considered eligible.
The Academy has also addressed generative AI, reserving the right to request additional information about its use and the extent of human authorship on submitted films.
Another significant shift is the change in the Best International Feature category, where a film can now qualify for consideration by winning a top prize at one of several major international film festivals. The award will no longer be given to a country or region, but rather to its director on its behalf.
The changes aim to evolve alongside technology while maintaining the Academy's commitment to human artistry.
