US President Donald Trump has openly admitted his desire to seize Iran's oil reserves, sparking controversy and raising concerns about the US's motives in the ongoing conflict.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Trump revealed that his 'favourite thing to do' in the Iran war is to 'take the oil in Iran', specifically targeting the export hub of Kharg Island.

Trump compared the potential move to Venezuela, where the US intends to control the oil industry 'indefinitely' following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January.

Kharg Island, a vital oil terminal off Iran's west coast, is being eyed by the Pentagon for ground operations, although the US insists it would stop short of a full-scale invasion.

The US-Israeli war against Iran has thrust the Middle East into crisis, sending oil prices surging by over 50% in a month.
