The US aircraft carrier Gerald R Ford has arrived in Croatia's Adriatic port of Split for repairs and maintenance after a non-combat fire broke out on board.

The fire, which occurred on March 12, injured three sailors and affected nearly 100 sleeping berths, with nearly 200 sailors treated for smoke-related issues.

The warship, which has been deployed for nine months, has also been plagued by plumbing problems affecting its 650 toilets.

The USS Gerald R Ford will host local officials and key leaders to reaffirm the strong alliance between the US and Croatia during its visit.

The carrier, staffed by over 5,000 sailors, boasts a sophisticated radar system and has more than 75 military aircraft aboard, including F-18 Super Hornets.
