The United States sank an Iranian frigate near Sri Lanka, killing 87 people and leaving 32 rescued. The US Department of War released video footage of a US submarine torpedoing the Iranian vessel.
The incident occurred in international waters, with Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, saying the US struck IRIS Dena without warning.
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated following last Saturday's joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran and the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the torpedo gave the Iranian warship a 'quiet death', while US Air Force General Dan Caine described it as an 'incredible demonstration of America's global reach'.
