WhatsApp is reportedly set for its biggest platform revamp, which would include transitioning from phone numbers to usernames and unique IDs, allowing users to send messages and make voice or video calls without sharing their phone numbers.
The platform is expected to roll out usernames globally by June 2026, with both consumers and businesses able to reserve unique handles. WhatsApp confirmed the development, stating that usernames will add an extra layer of privacy and make it easier to reach businesses on the platform.
The feature will be optional, giving users a choice to continue with phone numbers. WhatsApp will also introduce dynamic pricing for businesses, requiring them to bid maximum prices in real-time to have marketing messages sent on the platform.
Beta testing for the new pricing feature will run through the second half of 2026, with a planned launch in the second quarter of 2027. The changes are expected to bring more privacy and reduce spam, but may raise questions around data ownership and ecosystem lock-in.
