In a landmark judgment, a Delhi court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to 25 years of rigorous imprisonment for digitally raping a 2-year-old girl on Diwali eve. The Additional Sessions Judge, Babita Puniya, rejected the defense's plea for leniency, stating that the law does not distinguish between digital and penile penetration. The convict, who was a friend of the victim's father, committed the crime on October 20, and the trial was completed within a month. The judge noted that the convict's intoxication and illiteracy were not mitigating factors, and that the sentence would provide just retribution and protection to society. The court also awarded ₹13.5 lakh compensation to the victim's family. This verdict comes in the wake of high-profile rape cases in India, which have led to amendments in the existing law.
