A four-year-old boy from Madhya Pradesh has succumbed to his illness, months after falling into a coma due to alleged consumption of contaminated Coldrif cough syrup. The child, Harsh, had been in a critical condition since September last year and was admitted to AIIMS Nagpur's ICU for treatment. According to officials, at least 24 children died in Madhya Pradesh and Chhindwara after consuming the cough syrup, which contained a highly toxic compound that causes kidney failure. Investigations revealed that the syrup contained diethylene glycol, a poisonous substance that can lead to renal failure. The Madhya Pradesh government had banned the sale of the cough syrup in the first week of October, following the deaths of several children from Chhindwara and Betul districts. The company owner and a government doctor who recommended the syrup were arrested in the case. The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Drug Control had declared the syrup as 'Not of Standard Quality' and 'adulterated' due to the presence of 48.8% diethylene glycol. The post-mortem examination of Harsh's body was conducted at AIIMS Nagpur, and the exact cause of death will be ascertained after the report is released. The child's last rites were performed on Monday evening, as per his uncle's statement.
