In a conditional bail order, the Calcutta High Court has released an 80-year-old man accused of raping a minor after nearly five months of detention. The court considered the accused's advanced age and the prolonged delay in framing charges. According to reports, the accused was arrested in June this year in connection with a case registered at the Murutia police station in Nadia district, West Bengal. His lawyer argued that the accused was falsely implicated and that the case would likely drag on due to the prosecution's plan to examine 16 witnesses. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh granted bail to the accused, stipulating that he must furnish a bond of ₹20,000 with two local sureties of ₹10,000 each. The accused must also appear in court on each scheduled date and obtain prior permission to leave the Nadia district. The prosecution had initially opposed the bail application, citing the victim's statement before a magistrate and medical documents. However, the court's decision has been made pending the trial's progress.
