The BJP made a strong comeback in the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) bypolls, winning seven out of 12 wards. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to secure three wards, while the Congress won one. The BJP's victory is seen as a test of their strength after their win in the February assembly polls. In a major upset, AAP lost two of its strongholds: Chandni Mahal and Chandni Chowk. The Chandni Mahal ward, previously held by AAP candidate Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, saw a change in leadership when his father, Shoaib Iqbal, supported the AIFB candidate Mohammad Imran after AAP nominated Muddasir Usman Qureshi. Imran won the ward by a margin of 4,692 votes. The Chandni Chowk ward, which was won by AAP's Punardeep Singh Sawhney in the 2022 polls, also fell to the BJP. Sawhney's nomination as an MLA in February led to a bypoll, where the BJP candidate Suman Kumar Gupta defeated AAP's Harsh Sharma by 1,182 votes. The bypolls to the 12 MCD wards were held on November 30, and the results are a significant indicator of the BJP's strength in the city. The party's victory in these wards is seen as a boost to their confidence ahead of future elections.
