In a significant boost to India's defence self-reliance, Adani Defence & Aerospace has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Italian firm Leonardo to establish a helicopter manufacturing ecosystem in the country. The partnership aims to meet the growing needs of the Indian military, particularly for Leonardo's AW169M and AW109 TrekkerM helicopters, and deliver phased indigenisation, robust maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, as well as comprehensive pilot training. The MoU was signed in the presence of key defence officials, underscoring the government's commitment to promoting self-reliance in the defence manufacturing sector. This initiative aligns with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision, strengthening national defence readiness and potentially extending to civil aviation applications and international supply chain integration. The development comes on the heels of a similar partnership between Adani Defence & Aerospace and Brazilian firm Embraer to manufacture aircraft in India. Adani Defence & Aerospace director Jeet Adani hailed the alliance with Leonardo as a 'pivotal stride' towards a resilient and future-proof helicopter ecosystem in India, driving enduring value, high-skill employment, and alignment with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision. With the Indian armed forces projecting demand for over 1,000 helicopters in the coming decade, this partnership realises the vision for sovereign manufacturing, accelerating indigenisation, strengthening supply chains, and establishing India as a world-class production base. The military's requirements include light utility helicopters, medium-lift choppers, and maritime multi-role helicopters. It is worth noting that India had previously suspended business dealings with Leonardo and its subsidiary AgustaWestland International in 2014 following allegations of irregularities, including bribery. However, the government has since lifted the suspension, paving the way for this significant partnership.
