A serious safety concern has been raised by Transport Canada following an incident at Vancouver airport involving an Air India pilot. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) alleged that the captain was under the influence of alcohol before a scheduled flight to Delhi via Vienna on December 23, 2025. According to Air India, a last-minute delay was caused when a cockpit crew member was offloaded prior to departure due to safety concerns. An alternate pilot was then rostered to operate the flight. Transport Canada has written to Air India expressing concerns over the pilot's fitness for duty. Two breathalyzer tests conducted by the RCMP confirmed that the pilot was under the influence of alcohol and unfit for duty. This incident is considered a breach of Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs) 602.02 and 602.03, as well as conditions outlined in Air India's Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC). Transport Canada has asked Air India to take corrective steps and submit a response by January 26, detailing the findings and measures taken. The incident has sparked concerns over safety protocols and the airline's zero-tolerance policy towards any violation of applicable rules and regulations.
