Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav has sparked controversy by accusing the BJP of hiding key facts in the Codeine syrup scandal. At a press conference, Yadav claimed that the racket originated from the Prime Minister's constituency in Uttar Pradesh, worth thousands of crores and an international issue. Yadav alleged that the racket is much bigger than initially projected, involving over 700 companies and transactions worth several thousand crores. He called for a 'bulldozer-style' action against all 'mafias' involved in the business, regardless of their party affiliations. The Samajwadi Party chief also questioned the BJP government's selective approach to the issue, asking if standing in a picture with a politician makes someone a mafia. He pointed out that he too has photos with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and several BJP leaders. This comes after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused the Samajwadi Party of being connected to every mafia in the state, citing preliminary investigation findings. However, Yadav maintains that the BJP is trying to deflect attention from its own alleged involvement in the scandal. The Uttar Pradesh government has taken action against the illegal cough syrup smuggling case, with multiple agencies, including the STF and NDPS, investigating the matter. The investigation has revealed that codeine phosphate, a drug under the NDPS Act, is being misused in the manufacture of codeine-containing cough syrups.
