Andaman and Nicobar Islands Workers to Receive Boost with Minimum Wage Hike

In a move to enhance the financial stability of workers, Sri Vijaya Puram, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Lt Governor Admiral D K Joshi has announced a revision in minimum wage rates across all categories. The decision, effective from January 1, 2026, marks the second wage hike in less than six months in the archipelago. According to the revised rates, unskilled workers will earn ₹652 per day, up from ₹647, while semi-skilled or unskilled supervisory category workers will receive ₹733 per day, an increase from ₹728. Skilled or clerical workers will now earn ₹856 per day, up from ₹851, and highly skilled workers will receive ₹939 per day, an increase from ₹934. The revised rates apply to all six schedules of employment, including government departments, offices, and industrial establishments, as mandated under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948. The revised wage rates can be accessed on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Labour department's website, and employers are required to comply with the new rates to avoid punitive action. This move is expected to benefit thousands of workers in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and is a significant step towards ensuring a better standard of living for them.
