Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has unveiled a massive initiative to transform Rayalaseema into a horticultural hub. The ambitious plan aims to support farmers in cultivating 18 high-demand horticultural crops, which are in high global demand. The crops include banana, sugarcane, papaya, pomegranate, mango, onion, tomato, chilli, and lemon, among others. The ₹40,000 crore action plan, which is a part of the central government's Purvodaya scheme, will focus on providing farmers with necessary facilities, including roads, irrigation projects, and cold-chain infrastructure. The plan is expected to benefit six lakh horticulture farmers in Rayalaseema and Prakasam districts. Chief Minister Naidu has also set a goal to promote certification and traceability of produce, with a focus on shipping horticultural goods via air cargo to Dubai for re-export. The government plans to spend ₹14,000 crore on cultivation and marketing projects, including ₹9,000 crore in subsidies. The horticulture initiative is expected to create a new revenue stream for farmers in the region, with the Chief Minister envisioning the cultivation of horticultural crops on 50 lakh acres. By providing farmers with necessary support and facilities, the government aims to improve their livelihoods and transform Rayalaseema into a major horticultural hub.
