A sub-committee tasked with implementing the recommendations of the Assam Accord, particularly those concerning constitutional safeguards for Assamese people, is set to submit its report to the Assam government. Led by Minister Atul Bora, the eight-member panel has identified key areas of focus, including 40 recommendations that can be implemented by the state government and 15 that require Centre's approval. The sub-committee, formed in 2021, has made significant progress in implementing state-led recommendations, with many already underway or completed. The state government has also allocated a separate budget for these initiatives. For Centre-led recommendations, officials are in regular communication with the Union Home Ministry to facilitate progress. The Assam Accord, signed in 1985, aimed to address issues related to illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. However, some key provisions, particularly Clause 6, remain unfulfilled. The clause seeks to safeguard the cultural, social, and linguistic identity of Assamese people through constitutional, legislative, and administrative measures. The submission of the sub-committee's report is seen as a crucial step towards fulfilling the aspirations of the Assamese people. Minister Bora expressed hope that the report will lead to swift progress in implementing the remaining recommendations.
