The Assam government has taken a significant step towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) by passing a bill to ban polygamy in the state. The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, makes concealing a previous marriage punishable by up to 10 years in prison and unlawful polygamy punishable by up to 7 years. The bill, approved by the Assam cabinet, will cover people from all faiths, including Hindus, Muslims, Christians, and others. However, those from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category and areas under the Sixth Schedule will be exempt. The law also holds abettors, including priests and guardians, liable for up to two years in prison. Repeat offenders will face stricter penalties. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the ban on polygamy is a step towards implementing the UCC and that a separate bill against deceptive marriage will be introduced in the next session. The proposed law aims to curb the practice of polygamy and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their faith, are held accountable for their actions. The Assam government's move is seen as a significant step towards promoting social justice and equality in the state.
