Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed support for the reported changes made by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in school history textbooks. The changes reportedly remove the epithet 'great' from the names of Mughal emperor Akbar and Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan. Speaking to news agency ANI, Sarma welcomed the move, saying 'very well done' although he was unsure if the changes had been implemented. However, he went on to make a sharp comment about Tipu Sultan, saying 'it's time to send him packing'. The remarks come a day after RSS leader Sunil Ambekar claimed that NCERT has made changes to history textbooks, removing the 'great' epithet from the names of Akbar and Tipu Sultan. Ambekar praised the move, saying it's a step in the right direction for teaching the 'cruel deeds' of historical figures. However, Congress MP Imran Masood has questioned the impact of the reported changes, asking what it will achieve. Masood highlighted the contributions of the Mughal Empire, including India's status as the 'golden bird' during their rule, and criticized those who 'kneled before the British' and are now in power. The reported changes have sparked a debate on the portrayal of historical figures in school textbooks.
