Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday that the Election Commission's 'Special Intensive Revision' (SIR) exercise aims to keep out infiltrators from the electoral process. However, some opposition leaders are allegedly working to shield them. Modi made these remarks during a rally in Assam's Guwahati, where he also inaugurated the new terminal building of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport. The Prime Minister criticized the Congress for its decades-long neglect of Assam and the Northeast, saying it led to widespread violence and underdevelopment. Modi claimed that the BJP government is working to correct these mistakes and bring about significant development in the region. He pointed out that the districts previously affected by violence are now transforming into aspirational districts. Modi also accused the Congress of providing protection to infiltrators who threatened Assam's security and identity. The BJP government, he said, is committed to correcting the mistakes made by previous Congress governments in the Northeast. The newly inaugurated Terminal 2 building of the Guwahati airport is designed to handle 13.1 million passengers per year and was built at an expense of around ₹4,000 crore. Modi was accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the inauguration and tour of the new building.
