In a significant blow to Assam's narcotics network, the Assam Police has seized large quantities of contraband in three consecutive operations in Karbi Anglong. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the police force, describing the seizures as a 'Bollywood-style beating' for the drug mafia. The seized contraband includes 255.641 kg of ganja worth ₹1.2 crore, 1.985 kg of morphine valued at nearly ₹1.9 crore, and 9.44 kg of opium worth ₹47.5 lakh. One arrest was also made. In a separate operation, Assam Rifles, along with Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Manipur Police, destroyed about 35 acres of illicit poppy cultivation in Manipur's Kangpokpi district. The destroyed poppy fields had the potential to yield around 200 kgs of opium worth multiple crores. The joint operation highlights the efforts of Assam Rifles to curb illicit narcotics cultivation and dismantle the financial networks that fuel insurgency and other anti-national activities. Assam's aggressive stance against drugs is part of the ongoing 'Assam Against Drugs' campaign. The state police's 'Bollywood-style beating' of the drug mafia is a significant step towards eradicating the narcotics trade in the region. The seized contraband and destroyed poppy fields demonstrate the state's commitment to tackling the issue head-on.
