Violence erupted in Assam's Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday, leaving at least eight people injured. The clashes occurred between two groups of protesters, with the police resorting to lathi charge and tear gas to disperse them. Despite prohibitory orders, a large number of people, including women and children, took to the streets to protest against the violence. The agitators, demanding the eviction of encroachers from the tribal belt, gathered in the Kheroni market area. The situation escalated when stone pelting began from both sides, injuring several protesters, police personnel, and media persons. The police eventually used force to disperse the crowds, but the situation remains tense in the area. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured that the matter will be resolved soon, with senior minister Ranoj Pegu already present in the district to negotiate with the protesters. The protesters had earlier called off their 12-day hunger strike after talks with Pegu, but the clashes have renewed tensions. The protesters are demanding the eviction of encroachers from the Professional Grazing Reserve and Village Grazing Reserve lands in the two districts. The police have been accused of trying to forcibly remove the protesters, leading to the clashes. Additional forces have been deployed to the area to maintain law and order. The chief minister has expressed hope that the situation will be brought under control by nightfall. The clashes have raised concerns about the fragile situation in Karbi Anglong, where a similar incident on Monday resulted in four people being injured in police firing.
