A powerful earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck Bangladesh on Friday, claiming at least six lives and sending shockwaves to eastern and northeastern India. The tremors lasted for 26 seconds, causing widespread panic in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal, as well as in Assam. In Bangladesh, the earthquake led to three fatalities when a building roof and wall collapsed, and three pedestrians were crushed by falling railings. Dozens more were injured in panic-driven incidents across Dhaka, where buildings swayed sharply during the tremor. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located in Narsingdi, about 40 km east of Dhaka. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake's epicenter was 10 km east-southeast of Dhaka and at a depth of 10 kilometers. The earthquake was felt as far as Kolkata, where residents rushed out of their homes and offices in panic. 'We felt a strong jolt and buildings were shaking like trees,' said Dhaka resident Suman Rahman. 'Staircases were jammed as people rushed down. Everyone was terrified, children were crying.' The earthquake-prone zones of northern and southeastern Bangladesh are typically more active due to the collision of the India and Eurasia tectonic plates. However, the central region where Friday's quake struck is relatively less active, according to the USGS.
