In a groundbreaking moment for the BJP in Kerala, VV Rajesh was sworn in as the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram on Friday. The party made history by securing a landslide victory in the municipal corporation polls, winning 50 out of 101 wards. Rajesh, the state secretary and a councillor from Kodunganoor ward, secured 51 votes in the mayoral election, backed by an independent councillor. This marks the BJP's first-ever victory in a municipal corporation in the state. Rajesh hailed the moment as 'historic' and expressed his optimism that it could 'change the political situation of Kerala.' He emphasized that the development programmes would be implemented equally across all 101 wards, with a focus on transforming Thiruvananthapuram into one of the country's developed cities. The BJP's victory comes after four decades of an LDF majority in the municipal corporation. Reactions from senior BJP leaders, including state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, were overwhelmingly positive. Chandrasekhar criticized the LDF for allegedly 'running Thiruvananthapuram city to the ground' and making it a 'den of corruption.' The BJP aims to make Thiruvananthapuram one of the top three cities in the country, a goal echoed by Rajesh. In contrast, the UDF secured victories in the Kollam and Kochi municipal corporations, with A K Hafeez and V K Minimol being elected as mayors respectively.
