Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari has written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) expressing concerns over the alleged misuse of police during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. In a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of violating the neutrality principle and using police for partisan purposes. Adhikari pointed out that the TMC had organized a Second State Conference of Women Police Personnel, which was allegedly hijacked for political purposes. He accused TMC ministers of making scurrilous attacks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Central Government during the event. The BJP leader also alleged that the TMC had used the platform to label the SIR exercise as a "scam" and to fabricate voter details. Adhikari demanded that the ECI bar the West Bengal Police from primary election duties in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections and deploy Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure neutrality. He also sought an investigation into the West Bengal Police Welfare Committee's affiliations with the TMC and action against police officials involved in partisan activities. The ECI has accepted the TMC's request for a meeting on November 28, which is part of its initiative to strengthen relationships with political parties. The meeting is expected to discuss the SIR exercise and other election-related issues. The SIR exercise is being conducted in West Bengal and 11 other states and union territories ahead of the Assembly Elections likely to be held in 2026. Adhikari's allegations and demands have raised concerns over the impartiality of the police in the state and the potential for electoral fraud.
