Bharatiya Janata Party MP Tejasvi Surya has faced backlash for likening the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh into two states to a situation "much worse than the partition of India".
Speaking in Parliament, Surya criticized the Congress for "politics of postponement" and said the formation of Telangana was done in a "worse fashion" than the British during India's partition.
The remarks have triggered an uproar in Telangana, with the Congress and Bharat Rashtra Samithi demanding that the BJP MP be disqualified for insulting the Parliament.
Telangana backward classes minister Ponnam Prabhakar has demanded that the comments be expunged from the Lok Sabha records and called for the cancellation of Surya's membership in the House.
Senior BRS leader T Harish Rao has also lashed out at Surya, demanding an apology for comparing the formation of Telangana with the partition of India and Pakistan.
However, BJP state president N Ramachander Rao has brushed aside the allegations, saying the BRS and Congress are needlessly twisting and misrepresenting Surya's remarks.
