In a surprise move, BJP Kerala President Rajeev Chandrasekhar has announced plans to contest the 2026 Assembly elections from Nemom constituency. The declaration was made during a press briefing in Thrissur, amidst preparations for the upcoming local body polls. When asked if he would contest the Assembly polls next year, Chandrasekhar confidently replied, '100% I will fight. I will contest from Nemom.' Nemom has been a crucial constituency for the BJP in Kerala, with the party's O Rajagopal winning the seat in the 2016 Assembly polls. However, in the 2021 polls, the BJP's Kummanam Rajasekharan lost to CPM's V Sivankutty by a margin of 3949 votes. Interestingly, Chandrasekhar had a significant lead in the Nemom segment during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, but ultimately lost to Congress candidate Shashi Tharoor by 16,077 votes. Chandrasekhar's decision to contest from Nemom is notable, given the BJP's internal system, where the Parliamentary Board approves candidates after rigorous discussions at the state and national level. The Kerala unit of the BJP has not yet initiated discussions on candidates for the 2026 Assembly polls, making Chandrasekhar's move a significant development in the party's Kerala politics.
