The BJP has demanded the immediate dismissal of Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman Purushottam Bilimale, citing his 'insulting' comments about the Yakshagana art form. In a speech, Bilimale allegedly suggested that some Yakshagana performers in the past may have been inclined towards homosexuality due to their isolated living conditions and the pressure to conform to certain roles. BJP state chief B Y Vijayendra has condemned Bilimale's remarks, calling them unacceptable and an affront to the centuries-old folk theatre tradition. Vijayendra urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to take action against Bilimale, warning that the BJP would take to the streets if the government failed to respond. The controversy arose after Bilimale defended his comments, stating that he was drawing from personal experiences and accounts from other artistes. He noted that the living conditions and lifestyles of Yakshagana performers have changed significantly over the years, with many now traveling in comfort and returning home after shows. The BJP has criticized the Congress government for keeping Bilimale in office, accusing them of showing 'contempt for Yakshagana.' The dispute has sparked a heated debate about the role of government in promoting and preserving traditional art forms like Yakshagana.
