A controversy has erupted ahead of Christmas in Telangana after Chief Minister Revanth Reddy credited Sonia Gandhi with the celebration of Christmas in the state. The BJP has strongly criticized Reddy's remarks, calling them 'sycophantic' and an insult to the Christian community. During a Christmas event organized by the state government, Reddy linked the celebration to the birth of Jesus Christ and also mentioned that December is a significant month for Telangana and the Congress party, as it is Sonia Gandhi's birth month and also the month when Telangana was granted statehood. The BJP has accused the Congress of indulging in blind devotion to a family and prioritizing personal loyalty over the public mandate. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that Reddy's comments have crossed all limits of flattery and are an insult to Jesus Christ and the Christian community. Reddy also announced that the Telangana government will introduce legislation to punish those who incite religious hatred or insults against other faiths. This move comes after Karnataka, a neighboring state, introduced a bill to tackle hate speech against other religions. The Telangana government's decision has been seen as a positive step towards promoting religious harmony in the state.
