The Border Security Force (BSF) has successfully detected and countered 1,952 drone sightings along India's borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh in the past year. According to BSF data, 1,816 drone sightings were reported along the Indo-Pak border, while 136 were detected along the Indo-Bangladesh border between November 1, 2024, and October 31, 2025. The increased use of drones by smugglers based in Pakistan has been a major concern for India's security forces. Since 2019, these smugglers have used drones to transport drugs, arms, and ammunition into India, with the majority of cases reported along the Indo-Pak border in Punjab. In a significant development, the BSF's Punjab sector has downed nearly 255 drones in the state this year, with the majority being Chinese-made DJI Matrice and DJI Mavic models. To combat the growing threat of drone-based smuggling, the BSF has deployed advanced anti-rogue drone systems along the western border. These systems can detect and intercept rogue drones using jamming, spoofing, and cyber takeover mechanisms. Additionally, 100 ultra-light thermal imagers have been deployed on the western border, enabling security personnel to identify targets in low-light conditions. The use of drones for smuggling has been linked to several high-profile cases, including the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala and the attack on the Sarhali police station in August 2023. The BSF's efforts to counter these threats have been highly effective, with 23 anti-rogue drone systems deployed along the western border and a significant reduction in drone intrusions reported this year.
