In a move to prevent tax evasion, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has launched a campaign to encourage taxpayers to review and correct their income tax returns. The tax department is sending text messages and emails to identified taxpayers to check for false claims, including bogus donations to unrecognised political parties and ineligible deductions. The CBDT's 'NUDGE' campaign uses advanced data analytics to identify cases of suspected tax evasion. Taxpayers are advised to review their returns, verify their deductions and exemptions, and revise their returns by December 31, 2025, to avoid further inquiries. According to the CBDT, over 2.1 million taxpayers have already updated their returns for previous years, paying more than ₹2,500 crore in taxes. Additionally, over 1.5 million returns have been revised for the current year. Taxpayers who make genuine claims do not need to take further action. Those who do not update their returns by December 31 may still file an updated return from January 1, 2026, subject to payment of additional tax liability.
