The Union government has denied plans to introduce a bill on Chandigarh's administration in the upcoming Winter session of Parliament, despite initial reports sparking outrage in Punjab. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) clarified that the proposal, which aims to simplify the Centre's law-making process for Chandigarh, is still under consideration and no final decision has been made. The MHA emphasized that the proposal does not seek to alter Chandigarh's governance or administrative structure, nor does it aim to change the traditional arrangements between Chandigarh and its neighboring states, Punjab and Haryana. The Centre assured that it will consult with all stakeholders and prioritize Chandigarh's interests before making a decision. The proposed Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2025, has been at the center of controversy, with some reports suggesting it would empower the President to frame regulations for Chandigarh. Currently, the Union Territory is administered by Punjab's governor. However, the MHA maintained that the proposal is not intended to snatch Chandigarh from Punjab, and that there is no need for concern on this matter.
