Chennai Braces for 'Very Heavy' Rain: Schools Closed Amid IMD's Weather Alert

Heavy rainfall triggered by Cyclone Ditwah has forced schools in Chennai to remain closed on December 3. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts for Tamil Nadu, warning of 'very heavy' rainfall in the state on Wednesday.The cyclone, which weakened into a depression on Tuesday, is currently moving southwestwards towards the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast, with a speed of 3 kmph. Heavy rainfall has already lashed Madurai, causing severe waterlogging in several areas, including South Masi Street.Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning in several districts, including Chennai, Cuddalore, Kancheepuram, and Thanjavur. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in Coimbatore, Madurai, Theni, Tiruppur, and Nilgiris on Wednesday.The downpour has led to inundation in several parts of Chennai, Chengelpet, and Kanchipuram, with several acres of crops destroyed and 1,601 tenements damaged due to rain-related incidents. Four people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents, according to Revenue Minister KKSSR Ramachandran. The Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed 22,000 personnel to carry out rain-related work, including removing clogs in the drains.
