In a significant move to curb Maoist activities in the region, security forces have set up a new camp in the Karregutta Hills, a long-time hideout for senior Maoists. The 'Surakhsa Evam Jan Suvidha Camp', established on November 4 near Tadpala village in Bijapur district, will serve as a forward operating base for the 196th and 205th battalions of the Central Reserve Police Force and CoBRA, respectively. Last year, a 21-day operation in the area resulted in the elimination of 31 Naxalites, seizure of 35 weapons, and recovery of improvised explosive devices and other materials. The new camp aims to improve operational capabilities and provide essential services such as roads, electricity, drinking water, and healthcare facilities to the local population. The camp was set up after a joint effort by the District Reserve Guard, Special Task Force, CoBRA, and the CRPF. The forces displayed exceptional courage in navigating challenging terrain and establishing the camp despite the absence of roads, constant threat of IEDs, and acute water shortage. The location will also serve as a training centre for jungle warfare and field craft, aimed at enhancing operational capabilities in insurgency-hit regions. Since the establishment of the camp, 14 IEDs have been recovered and safely defused by bomb disposal teams. The development comes as part of the state's efforts to strengthen security in the region. In the past year, 202 Maoists have been killed, 749 have surrendered, and 1,006 have been arrested in Bijapur district. The 'Niyad Nella Naar' scheme has also reported significant progress in road connectivity, electricity supply, water facilities, and healthcare expansion in remote villages near security camps.
