India has strongly condemned China's recent actions, labeling them 'most unhelpful' in efforts to build mutual trust and normalise bilateral ties. The incident involved the detention of an Indian citizen, Prema Wangjom Thongdok, at the Shanghai airport, where her passport was declared invalid due to Arunachal Pradesh being listed as her birthplace. The Chinese authorities claimed the region was part of Chinese territory, which India firmly rejects. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), arbitrary actions by China are hindering progress in people-centric engagements and maintaining peace and tranquility in the border regions. The two countries have been working to normalise bilateral relations, but recent incidents are causing tension. The MEA has consistently rejected Chinese claims over Arunachal Pradesh, with the region being an integral and inalienable part of India. The Chinese foreign ministry, however, has maintained that the region is part of China's territory and that the woman was treated according to Chinese laws and regulations. India has lodged a strong protest with China, both in Beijing and Delhi, and the Indian consulate in Shanghai has extended full assistance to the stranded passenger. The MEA has reiterated that peace and tranquility in the border regions are essential for the continued development of India-China bilateral relations.
