S Balamurugan, 32, allegedly killed his estranged wife, S Sirpriya, 30, with a sickle inside a women's hostel where she lived. Sirpriya had moved to Coimbatore with her two children after separating from Balamurugan, and they were staying with her mother. She had taken up a job at a store and was living in the hostel. Balamurugan's suspicion of Sirpriya being in a relationship with one of his relatives led to a heated argument, which ultimately turned violent. According to police, Balamurugan arrived at the hostel, armed with a sickle, and attacked Sirpriya multiple times after another argument. The other women in the hostel fled in fear, and it wasn't until they alerted the police that Balamurugan was apprehended at the scene. He had sat down on a chair, took a selfie with Sirpriya's body, and waited for the police to arrive. Balamurugan's motive was driven by his suspicion of infidelity, which ultimately led to a tragic and senseless act of violence.
