Former Congress MP Shakeel Ahmad has sparked controversy after accusing the party's national leadership of ordering attacks on his residences in Patna and Madhubani. Ahmad made the claim just days after launching a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi, describing him as a 'darpok' (coward) and 'insecure'. Ahmad alleged that he was informed by Congress colleagues about orders from the party leadership to carry out an attack on his homes under the pretext of burning effigies. He shared a screenshot of a WhatsApp group message urging district presidents and assembly presidents to burn his effigies in protest. The security has been heightened outside Ahmad's residence in Patna following his claim. Ahmad has been a vocal critic of Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of being dictatorial and non-democratic. He claimed that Gandhi promotes only young leaders who sing his praises, and that he is uncomfortable in the presence of senior leaders with public standing. Ahmad's remarks sparked a backlash, with some Congress leaders defending Rahul Gandhi. The controversy comes as the Congress party is already reeling from internal divisions and a decline in popularity. Shakeel Ahmad, a three-time MLA and two-term MP from Bihar, resigned from the Congress in November 2025 after the Bihar Assembly elections. He has been a vocal critic of Rahul Gandhi and has accused him of being responsible for the party's decline.
