In a bid to finalize their alliance for the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly polls, a five-member Congress team will meet DMK President MK Stalin and the ruling party's seat sharing committee in Chennai on December 3. The Congress team, led by AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Girish Chodankar, includes party leaders Suraj Hegde and Nivedith Alva, TNCC President K Selvaperunthagai, and Congress Legislature Leader Rajesh Kumar. The Congress has confirmed it will continue with the DMK's Secular Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu, putting an end to speculation about a potential alliance with actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The speculation had been fueled by a phone call between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Vijay following a stampede at a TVK rally in Karur that killed 41 people. DMK leaders claim they are in a strong position to offer the same number of seats as their allies contested in the 2021 assembly polls. However, a senior DMK leader revealed that almost all allies are seeking more seats, with some Congress cadres pushing for as many as 45 seats. The Congress team's meeting with Stalin and the DMK's seat sharing committee is expected to be a crucial step in determining the number of seats each party will contest in the upcoming polls.
