Karnataka's Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement) K Ramachandra Rao has been suspended by the government following an inappropriate video of him going viral on social media. The video, which appears to show Rao in an intimate situation with a woman, has sparked widespread outrage and led to a probe by the state government. According to reports, the video was circulated on social media and brought to the attention of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who ordered an investigation and subsequently suspended Rao pending further inquiry. Rao, a 35-year veteran of the police force, has denied the allegations, claiming that the video is fake and that he has no knowledge of its origin. However, the Chief Minister has vowed to take disciplinary action against Rao if the allegations are proven true. This is not the first time Rao has been embroiled in a controversy. In 2014, he was accused of colluding with a businessman in a money seizure case, and a CID investigation found that there was a 'great degree of lapse' on his part. Rao's suspension has also raised questions about his promotion to the post of DGP in September 2023, just months after his stepdaughter Ranya Rao was involved in a gold smuggling case. The incident has sparked a wider debate about accountability and discipline within the police force, and whether senior officers are held to the same standards as junior officers. As the investigation into Rao's conduct continues, one thing is clear: the Karnataka government is taking a tough stance on misconduct within its ranks, and will not tolerate behavior that undermines public trust in the police.
