A powerful Cyclone Ditwah is barreling down on the Tamil Nadu coast, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the Cauvery delta districts. The storm, which was upgraded to a cyclonic storm, entered the open sea on Saturday and is expected to make landfall by November 30. In Ramanthapuram district, a tourist van got stranded in a flooded area near a canal, but the occupants managed to escape unharmed. The district administration has warned people to stay indoors due to the adverse weather conditions, and tourists have been advised to avoid visiting Dhanushokodi, a town that was devastated by a cyclone in 1964. Heavy rain has been reported in several parts of the state, including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Chennai. The rain has forced schools in vulnerable districts to close for the day, and strong winds and high tides have been reported in Ramanthapuram and Nagapattinam districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the cyclone will move north-northwestwards and reach the southwest Bay of Bengal near North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by early morning of November 30. Private weather bloggers have also confirmed that the cyclone's track has not changed and that it will bring more rain to Chennai, Cuddalore, and Puducherry by tonight. The name 'Ditwah' was suggested by Yemen, referring to a lagoon on the island of Socotra. The cyclone is expected to bring significant relief to the region, which has been experiencing drought-like conditions in recent months.
