Cyclone Ditwah Nears TN, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh: Red Alert Issued, Temperature to Drop in NW India

A powerful Cyclone Ditwah, which has already claimed over 120 lives in Sri Lanka, is expected to make landfall on the south coast of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh by Sunday morning. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is moving north-northwestwards and is likely to be centered over the southwest Bay of Bengal within a distance of 60 km from the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coastline by Saturday midnight. The IMD has issued a red-category warning for the north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the region. The affected areas can expect light to moderate rainfall at most places, heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places, and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places. Meanwhile, northwest India can expect a significant drop in temperature, with a fall of 2-4°C expected over the next three days. Minimum temperatures in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh are already below 6°C, and a similar drop is expected in other parts of the region. The IMD has also predicted light to moderate rainfall in Kerala, Mahe, and Telangana, with heavy rainfall at isolated places. The cyclone is expected to gradually weaken and move away from the region, with rainfall decreasing over the next few days. The Indian Air Force has already begun airlifting aid and personnel to Colombo, Sri Lanka, in response to the cyclone.
