A powerful Cyclone Ditwah is barreling towards the coasts of Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh, with warnings issued for the regions. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm is currently moving over coastal Sri Lanka and is expected to make landfall in Tamil Nadu by early Sunday. As of Friday morning, the cyclone was located about 40 km southwest of Trincomalee and 100 km northwest of Batticaloa in Sri Lanka. The IMD predicts Cyclone Ditwah will move north-northwest, crossing the Sri Lanka coast and the southwest Bay of Bengal, before reaching the Indian coast. Regional Met departments have issued red alerts in several Cauvery Delta districts, including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, until November 30. The Cyclone warning signal No. 2 has been hoisted at Puducherry port, and authorities have advised coastal populations to remain alert as the system intensifies. The cyclone has already wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka, claiming at least 46 lives and leaving 23 people missing. Nationwide, 43,991 people have been evacuated to schools and other public shelters, with schools closed, train services suspended, and the Colombo Stock Exchange announcing an early trading halt.
