Cyclone Ditwah: Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rainfall as Storm Nears Coastline

Tamil Nadu is bracing for heavy rainfall and strong winds as Cyclone Ditwah approaches the Indian coast. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm is moving northwards at 5 kmph and is expected to make landfall within the next 24 hours. The IMD has issued a red alert for parts of Tamil Nadu, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in some areas and heavy to very heavy rainfall in others. As a result, 47 flights scheduled to depart from Chennai Airport on Sunday have been cancelled, including 36 domestic and 11 international flights. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has forecast heavy to very heavy rain in several districts, including Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Puducherry. Light to moderate rain is also expected across many parts of Tamil Nadu and the Puducherry region, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas. The IMD has advised people to stay indoors, avoid coastal areas, and follow guidance from local authorities. Fishermen have also been warned not to enter the sea in affected zones. The cyclone is also expected to bring heavy rainfall to parts of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Telangana. The IMD has issued a rainfall warning for coastal Andhra Pradesh-Yanam region, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and Telangana, with heavy to very heavy showers predicted in some areas and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated patches.
