Cyclone 'Senyar' Nears Indonesia Coast: IMD Issues Landfall Warning Amid Heavy Rains in Tamil Nadu

A powerful cyclonic storm, 'Senyar,' is barreling towards the Indonesia coast after intensifying from a deep depression over the Strait of Malacca. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the storm is expected to make landfall this afternoon, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall. The IMD has also warned of a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of south Sri Lanka, which is expected to intensify into a depression and bring heavy rainfall to parts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. Residents in these regions can expect light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places. The IMD has issued a rain alert for the Nicobar Islands, with gusty winds ranging from 70 kmph to 90 kmph expected throughout the day. In Tamil Nadu, schools and colleges were shut on Tuesday due to disruptions caused by heavy rains, which inundated several residential areas in the coastal Tuticorin district. The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall in the state on Wednesday and Thursday, with thunderstorms and lightning also expected. The IMD's latest bulletin states that the cyclonic storm is expected to maintain its intensity for the next 24 hours, moving west-southwestwards and then recurving eastwards during the subsequent 48 hours.
