A devastating collision between a parked truck and a speeding SUV on the Rishikesh-Haridwar road has claimed four lives. The accident occurred near PNB City Gate late on a Tuesday evening when the SUV, heading from Haridwar to Rishikesh, lost control and crashed into the stationary truck. The victims, who were traveling in the SUV, died instantly, and their bodies were shifted to a hospital by ambulance. According to the Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh, the driver may have lost control while trying to avoid an animal on the road. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident. This tragic incident highlights the dangers of road travel in Uttarakhand, particularly on its winding and narrow mountain roads. The state has witnessed over 1,000 road accidents annually, with the risk increasing during monsoon and winter seasons due to poor visibility. To combat this issue, the Uttarakhand cabinet has approved the Road Safety Policy, 2025, with the goal of reducing road accidents by 50% by 2030. The policy aims to ensure road user safety, raise awareness, develop safer infrastructure, and strengthen emergency medical care for accident victims.
