In a bid to curb dog attacks in Dehradun, the Dehradun Municipal Corporation has introduced stringent new rules for dog owners. The rules, set to come into effect after official gazette publication, require all pet dog owners to obtain a license for their pets. The license, valid for one year, will be mandatory for dogs over three months old. Additionally, owners must provide an anti-rabies vaccination certificate issued by a veterinarian. Unfortunately, the new rules also mean that dog owners could face serious consequences if their pets bite someone. In such cases, a challan will be issued and an FIR can be registered against the owner. The municipal corporation may also take the dog into custody. This move follows a string of dog attacks in Dehradun, including a recent incident where a Rottweiler bit an auto driver after its owner unleashed it during an argument. The owner, who failed to register the dog, was fined ₹5,000 and warned. The dog was subsequently registered and its owner ordered to sterilize it within three months. The new rules aim to promote responsible dog ownership and maintain public safety in Dehradun. As the city grapples with the issue of dog attacks, these measures are seen as a necessary step towards a safer community.
